Rock-wallabies live in small groups or colonies, with individuals having overlapping home ranges of about 15 ha each. They are highly territorial, with a male's territory overlapping one or more female territories. Even at night, they do not move further than two kilometers from their home refuges. Their reliance on refuges leads to a fortress-like existence: they spend days in steep, rocky, complex terrain in caves, overhangs, or vegetation, and range out at night to feed, with greatest activity three hours before sunrise and after sunset. Suitable habitat is limited and patchy, leading to varying degrees of colony isolation and genetic differentiation. Three preferred habitat categories are loose piles of large boulders, cliffs with mid-level ledges and caves, and isolated rock stacks.
